I started with the AAA Birthday prompt to use rainbow colors. I smooshed Broken China, Wild Honey, and Worn Lipstick Distress Inks on different sized acrylic blocks, spritzed them with water, and one by one smooshed them onto watercolor paper. I let each one sit for a bit to allow the color to seep into the paper. Now what? A few years ago I saw this card on Darlene Pavlick's blog and was inspired to buy the Oriental Screen die from Tutti and to fill in some of the openings with the negative pieces to create interest. It has become my favorite background die. I cut one from black and one from copper paper saving the leftovers for another card. I used a CZ Design die to cut the sentiment once from copper paper and twice from black to stack. I then cut the shadow from black. I have to warn you that the shadow die cuts the openings in the b, d, and p's which on a busy background is distracting. Because I used Hero Arts Color Hues Premium Pitch Black cardstock which is thick, completely matte, and has a black core, I could pop those cut out pieces back in without it being obvious. You have to know what you are looking for to see the edges. There was also, despite careful placement, an issue with black lines from the background cutting through the spaces between r and the t, and h and the b which looked klutzy and, again, distracting. A pair manicuring scissors took care of that. All that was left to do was attach the finished panel to a card base and stamp a sentiment inside.

In addition to the AAA Birthday Rainbow or Rainbow Colors, I am entering this card in the Seize the Birthday Anything Goes, and Creative Crafty Uncles Happy Birthday challenges. You emboss a piece of watercolor paper, spray it with your favorite ink spray and water, let it dry, and repeat until you like how it looks. Then, because all that water will somewhat flatten out the paper, you emboss it again. Embossing before spraying encourages the ink to pool in ways that enhance the design. I needed a birthday card for my husband, so I flipped through my embossing folders for something a little masculine and found a Tim Holtz 3D Texture Fades folder that I have had for something like five years and had never used! How did that happen?! I am sure y'all never lose track of what you have... The folder is called Foundry and I used Tree Lot, Frosted Juniper, and Antiqued Bronze Distress Mica sprays. I used A Paper Rose die to cut the sentiment twice in thick black cardstock and once in Copper Foil paper and stacked them. The cats were cut from some brown metallic paper from Michael's using a set from Impression Obsession and stacked on more black cardstock. I found they faded into the background, so I used some Pebo Copper Guilding Wax which is a new addition to my craft collection, I mean stash, to give them more dimension and make them pop out. Our pointy ear darlings would tell you that is how is should be because the cats are the most important element.

Here is the inside of the card.

I stamped a sentiment from Close to My Heart twice using Rustic Wilderness Distress Oxide ink and then dabbed a Copper Color Box pigment pad on some of the edges of the stamp and stamped a few times. I love my MISTI! It doesn't show well in the photo but shines in real life. The strip at the bottom was leftover after trimming down the front panel. My water color paper is 9x12 so I start with 4.5x6 paper. As a matter of fact there is a challenge for that. The NBUS (Never Before Used Schtuff) challenge is designed to inspire us use some of those craft supplies we have have been collecting. This is one of my aspirations for 2023. I have started putting newly purchased items in a bin next to my inks to remind me to use them and am also trying to make it a point to pull out older supplies that need to be christened. As I was thinking about the panda and maybe a balloon, I stumbled on the Once Upon a Time challenge featuring one of my favorite books from childhood, Harold and the Purple Crayon which is about a little boy who uses his purple crayon to bring his imagination to life. If you have never read it, there is read aloud video posted on the challenge page. Now I had my concept. My panda would use his crayon to create a balloon to float over to visit the birthday child and wish them a happy birthday. I used a die from Altenew's Mix and Match Frames set to cut the dotted border for the AAA Birthday challenge to use dots or stripes. I used an old, often used punch to cut the balloon, sponged on some ink to give it dimension and popped it up with thin foam tape. The sentiment was cut using an old die from Simon Says Stamp. To make the crayon I cut a small strip of purple paper, trimmed the end to look like a crayon, used a flat paint brush to apply ink to the ends and cut it to fit his paw. Up, up and away my little panda!

I also plan to enter this in the Retro Rubber Anything Goes challenge. I had an old blended, slightly distressed background in similar colors, so I cut it down and gilded the edges. I cut out the center and embossed it with an old Stampin' Up 3D embossing folder and then cut a ring to go around it from some textured gold paper from the Paper Studio. I backed the square with two pieces of cardstock before attaching it to the card base to give it some dimension. I embossed the sentiment from Simon Says Stamp Vintage Garden set and and used the coordinating die to cut it out and stacked it on a second cutout. A childhood friend lives Gloucester which, being rural, is somewhat lacking in retail opportunities. Sometimes when we meet for lunch, instead of meeting somewhere halfway, she comes up here for a Hobby Lobby fix. Now I buy pretty much all my crafting supplies online, so I am just along for the ride and company while she shops. Or at least that's what I tell myself. Let's just say I walked out with four packages of silk flowers from The Paper Studio and a few other goodies. I suspect I am not the only one with an enabling crafty friend or two.

For my first ever card with silk flowers I decided to use the Freshly Made Sketch below to make a card for the {PIN}spiratioinal Flower challenge and a new challenge, the Beautiful Blossoms Floral challenge. Beautiful Blossoms is a monthly challenge that starts on the 15th of each month and ends on the 12th of the following month. For the background I ink smooshed on watercolor paper using Lindy's Magicals on a craft sheet, then misted the paper once it was covered and sprinkled a little more powder on and misted again. One of the cool things about Magicals is that the shimmer is not always the same color as the pigment. The cover die is Circle of Leaves by Simon Says Stamp. Then I forgot, so here it is just under the wire.

I started by spraying a 9x12 sheet of bristol paper with Dina Wakely Turquoise and Ocean gloss sprays and Tim Holtz Tarnished Brass Distress spray stain and cutting out a square of it, saving rest to be used on other cards. Eventually... To add interest I inked the Sacred Spells stamp from Lavinia with Stampin' Up's Tranquil Tide ink and used second generation stamping on the right side and dabbed some of it along the bottom. To gild the edges I held the panel upright and pushed each edge into Versamart ink and Ranger Princess Gold embossing powder and heated it. I also heat embossed the sentiment using a stamp from Hero Arts' Smile stamp and cut set.

I stacked 3 die cuts made using Penny Black's Kitty Love die and colored the heart. When I didn't like the colors I used I added a fourth layer with the heart colored using Spun Sugar, Abandoned Coral, and Festive Berries Distress inks topped with Wink of Stella and liked it much better. I popped up the square with two more slightly smaller squares of cardstock and finished it off with an acrylic star.

My husband, known as Soft Touch to our cats, loved the card. Thank you for stopping by! None of y'all have that problem do you, lol? First up is this stamp from Hero Arts, issued to celebrate their 45th year in business in 2019, which I combined with this Freshly Made Sketch.

I wanted a sun washed desert feel, so I searched through my stash and found a background created using Cape Cod Coral and Clam Bake Beige from the Lindy's Magicals' Nantucket Pearls set on watercolor paper which I trimmed down to 4 x 5.25 inches. To create interest I inked the Sacred Spells stamp from Lavinia with Fired Brick Distress Oxide ink and used second generation stamping on the upper left and lower right sides. I did the same thing using a stamp from Stampin' Up's All Adorned and Festive Berries ink in the lower right corner. To complete the background I inked around the edges with Abandoned Coral using a small blending brush.

After stamping the sun in Ground Espresso, I used stamps from Stampin' Up's Desert Details set, my MISTI, and Salvaged Patina and Evergreen Bough inks to put down a base for the stripes. I then randomly dabbed Evergreen Bough and Ground Espresso on the upper stamp and Rustic Wilderness and Ground Espresso on the lower stamp and stamped again to give them a distressed weathered look. I stamped the sentiment using one from the same set in Ground Espresso. To add dimension I cut the trimmings from the original background to make some narrow stripes. I finished the panel with some clear acrylic drops I had on hand and popped it up on a card base with two extra panels of cardstock.

I love the seventies vibe of the stamp and the warm sun washed look of the finished. Gina has an easy to recognize style involving ink blending with stamping, often silhouette, over it, lots of white space, and a thin black mat mounted on a white card base. This pet sympathy card, based on the comforting idea of The Rainbow Bridge, is my take on it. I used small blending brushes and Distress ink with a stencil made with a heart die from Stampin' Up and a piece of Gina K Masking Magic to create a rainbow heart. The cat was cut from black cardstock using a die from Paper Roses and the sentiment is from an old Close to my Heart set, Big Hug. I used a die from Altenew's Mix and Match Frame set to cut the black dots around the edge.

I also plan to enter this the Make My Monday All Creatures Great and Small and Allsorts A/G with option of All About Hearts challenges.

Thank you for stopping by! No, really! The plan was to emboss an old Hero Arts stamp, Branches and Flourishes Christmas Tree, using PEARLustre Emerald embossing powder from Stampendous, embellish it with bitty sparkles that were colored with a red alcohol marker and top it with a gold sparkle from Stampin' Up. Gold embossing a sentiment from an old Close to My Heart set, Holiday wishes, would complete a CAS card for the Stamping Sensations "Add Some Sparkle" and ABC Christmas "A is for Anything Christmas Goes" challenges.

Alas, when I went to embellish the tree it came to my attention that the power on the end of the lower right branch had failed to melt and had since smeared. What to do? Cover it up, of course. One of my favorite dies, labeled simply "Cat Set" from Impression Obsession to the rescue! I embossed the sentiment on a strip popped up with thin foam tape to provide something for the cats, which had been cut three times and stacked for dimension, to stand on. And you know they had to have blingy collars for the holidays. Can You Handle the Pressure is an anything using an embossing folder goes with an optional twist challenge which begins on the second and fourth Saturday of each month at 12:00 a.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m. the Wednesday before the next challenge begins. The current optional twist is borders.

After trying all three of Jennifer's techniques with different folders I selected one using Hydrangea Blue and Sweet Violet Purple Teal from Lindy's Magicals' Victorian Bouquet set and the Swirls and Curls embossing folder from Stampin' Up, I embossed a piece of watercolor paper, sprinkled the powders on it, and spritzed with lots of water. It doesn't show in the picture above that the mica in Sweet Violet Purple Teal is teal. It shows a bit better in this photo I took outside with the card angled to the sun:

Now to make a card! When I place the panel against the card it didn't seem grounded, so I cut a mat in white and inked the edges with Villainous Potion Distress Oxide ink which was too bright, so I toned it down with a little Dusty Concord Distress Oxide. I made three hello die cuts using a Birch Press Design die and stacked them for dimension. Lastly I nestled some silver pearls from Stampin' Up in the swirls on the purple side.

I also plan to enter this in the Birthstone Challenges, a new challenge that runs in six week cycles beginning the first of of each odd numbered month and ending the 15th of even numbered months. For each challenge we are asked to create any project featuring the birthstone colors of the challenge period which for January and February would be garnet and amethyst meaning red and/or purple. You may use one or both colors and include other colors, but the birthstone colors must be dominant.

Thank you for stopping by! The other element that attracted me was that this is not a photo, but a piece of art with texture from brush strokes and layers of color. I knew at once that I would use my Prismacolor pencils, my Poppy Stamps window die, a cat die (I have a few), and the Pine Trees 3D Shading stamp from Spellbinders that I think I bought right before the Pandemic.

I stamped the trees with light gray ink and colored over them with my pencils. I applied a little Stickles on the tops of the branches which shows up yellow in this picture. I used an Impression Obsession die to cut the cats three times each, stacked them, used dark gray and black pencils to create contours, and then applied a layer of Glossy Accents over them. I cut three windows and stacked them with a piece of acetate between the bottom and middle layers. The background panel was cut using a stitched nesting frame from Penny Black. I cut the stamped trees down to fit behind the window and attached the cats to the front. I tucked a piece of thin foam tape between the upper part of each cat and the acetate to level it up to the lower portion that was attached to the window sill. For each challenge we are asked to create any project featuring the birthstone colors of the challenge period which for January and February would be garnet and amethyst meaning red and/or purple. You may use one or both colors and include other colors, but the birthstone colors must be dominant. Katherine's favorite color is purple. The optional theme for the Seize the Birthday challenge is Things With Wings and she has always loved butterflies. This shouldn't be difficult! Here is what I came up with.

I used an old layering die, Butterfly Beauty from the Beauty Abounds bundle by Stampin' Up, to cut the bottom layer from glossy white paper and the top from silver shimmer paper. I backed the butterflies with some old patterned paper which is primarily shades of purple with a bit of blue mottled together. The background is the scrap left after using the dies on white paper that I then splattered with a violet Wink of Stella brush and fitted around the butterflies. I finished it off with a popped up sentiment and sparkles.

It is hard to see how shiny this card is when photographed inside with a bounce flash, so I used my phone to take this shot outside in an attempt to capture it without a direct flash which would white out everything.

Please consider checking out and maybe entering the current Seize the Birthday challenge which runs until January 24 at 9:00 a.m. and the inaugural Birthstone Challenge which ends February !5 at 4:00 p.m. MT. This time I cut them from white cardstock for a white CAS (ish) card with a pop of color provided by a background I made using watercolor paper and Lindy's Magicals which are like Brusho powders with mica in them. I used the Victorian Bouquet set which has green mica in some of the colors. For each block I used Hero Arts square Infinity dies to cut two squares to stack and then taped two dies together to cut a frame for the third layer. I then used the smaller, "inside" die to cut a square of the background to inlay. I cut two of each cat and stacked them to give them some dimension. For the panel I used a die from Altenew's Mix and Match Frames set and trimmed off one end for a 4x3 panel and backed it with more of the background. I heat embossed a sentiment from an old Close to My Heart set, Holiday Tags, in silver.

Inside I heat embossed a sentiment from Gina K Designs' So Many Sentiments set and used some of the extra cats and scraps to pretty it up.

I also plan to enter this into the AAA Birthday Anything Birthday and Show Us Your Pussycats Anything Goes challenges. I used a CZ Design die set to cut the sentiment and shadow from Champagne foil and vellum paper. The shadow die has openings for the p's, b, and d which I sometimes find distracting on a busy background, so I saved the negative spaces and glued them in. The mama cat was cut with a die from Spellbinders and the kittens from a set by Obsession Impression.

This card is for my sister, a kindergarten teacher who is owned by a ginger cat. I cut the cats using a punch from Stampin' Up, flipped one and intertwined their tails. After making note of where they would be on the card I carefully masked off parts of the Wildflowers stamp by Simon Says Stamp so the flowers would frame the cats without creating busyness behind them. I cut the heart out of Grapefruit Grove holographic paper from Stampin' Up using one of their dies and used another Stampin' Up die to cut the word love three times and stacked them. Once assembled, I matted the panel with more of the Grapefruit Grove holographic paper and black cardstock. This background is part of a play session with sprays in which I used mostly 9x12 sheets of bristol paper and watercolor paper. For this particular one I sprayed water and then Bubble Gum Pink Shimmer, Periwinkle Blue, and Vibrant Turquoise Dylusions inks on bristol paper and then smooshed a second sheet flat on it. When I picked up the top sheet there was still a lot of ink pooling on the bottom sheet, so rather then blot it up with a paper towel I grabbed the first sheet of cardstock I could lay my hands on, Sea Glass from Close to my Heart, and smooshed it on in different spots until I had blotted up the pools of ink.

I used an old Hero Arts Cut Out Christmas Fancy die to cut the top of 4.25 x 4.50 piece which left me with a beautiful, blue and turquoise script Christmas die cut that I could use somewhere else. Once I attached the panel to a white card base I didn't really like the look of the white showing through the opening so I used the same die to cut the top of a white panel the same size as the first to have a white Christmas die cut to inlay in the opening to give the card a more finished look. I finished the card off with a silver foil snowflake cut using an old Close to My Heart die, a sparkle, and a strip of silver foil.

If you are keeping track, I had a white twin of the blue and turquoise panel and that blue/turquoise Christmas die cut which I couldn't let go to waste, so I made a second card:

I just love a two for one, don't you? I happily obliged while having fun playing with my new 8x10 Gel Press, experimenting and getting a feel for applying acrylic paint to it. The colors I used for this background are actually pretty bright, not pastels. After rolling out the paint, I continued to brayer off paint until I had a thin coat, let it dry, and then rolled on a thin coat of white to pull it. I used part of the print to back a die cut made using the Hero Arts Snowflake Pattern Cover Plate die. I used a die set from Pink and Main to cut the sentiment from the darkest sheet from Stampin' Up's Silver Foil Specialty pack. I love the purple cast and lined texture of it. Although it showed against the background, the snowflakes were a little distracting, so I cut the shadow from some vellum which muted the snowflakes just enough to lift the sentiment from the background. I finished my card with some light purple sparkles.

I also plan to enter this in the {PIN}spirational Winter Challenge and Happy Little Stampers Anything Goes With Dies challenge. Acrylics don't behave like ink and have a bit of a learning curve, but you can get effects you can't get with ink. It is definitely a lesson in letting go because despite your planning, you can never be sure exactly what you are going to end up with. That's part of what makes it so fun! Right now I am practicing putting down a layer using different colors of paint and picking it back up on paper, otherwise known as pulling the print.

I needed a birthday card for my husband, had a bunch of prints, and saw this Freshly Made Sketch:

I could see little cats sitting/standing in squares cut from my prints just like they were in windows. One of my ways of making quick(er) cards that don't look thrown together is to keep a stash of backgrounds. Whenever I am playing with a new technique, I make lots of backgrounds and keep them all including the ones I am not pleased with. There is usually a part that can be used to back a cut out window or to die cut a shape or sentiment. I didn't like the one I used for this card, but the part along one side was pretty which was fortuitous because the AAA Cards challenge is to create a clean and simple card with the design along one edge and an optional twist of snow.

First I used the Hero Arts Snowflake Edge die to cut a border on the front of the card. Then I attached the background in question that I made had by smooshing ink spritzed with Hero Arts White Iridescent Shimmer Mist onto watercolor paper behind the front of the card. I embossed a sentiment from the Ornamental Christmas set by CZ Design for Simon Says Stamp in silver and added a strip of silver foil cardstock from my scraps to compliment it. I figured I was pushing the limits of CAS with layers, so I resisted the urge to put clear sparkles in the centers of the snowflakes. I also plan to enter this in the CAS on Friday Christmas Challenge and Addicted to Stamps and More Die Cut or Stencils Challenge.

Thank you for stopping by! Being in full Christmas card mode, I used a snowflake stencil from Stampin' Up. Rather than use the colored pencil and Gamsol technique Gina used, I lightly colored the snowflake impressions with a colored pencil. I cut 1.5 x 3.75 inch panels, swiped more ink round the edges, and stacked each on two layers of heavy Very Vanilla cardstock for dimension. I attached the outer two panels first and then lined up the middle panel evenly between them. HINT: Pay attention to how the design lines up. I had to perform a card-ectomy because I attached the middle panel upside down.

I had sort of an antiqued brass embellishment I wanted to use to anchor the sentiment, but it did not show well. I tried coating it in gold embossing powder, but it still didn't show, so I tried platinum powder from Ranger which worked, but I did have to sacrifice some of the detail. I like to think it evokes the look of old worn hardware on a wooden cupboard. I used the same powder to emboss the sentiment and gild the edges.

This technique would work well for any masculine card. Thank you for stopping by! You could say that this die cut from Penny Black is purrfect. Actually the cats are in a horizontal frame which I cut off because I envisioned a nice big moon which wouldn't fit, but I am getting ahead of myself.

I started with a piece of Bristol and positioned a circle where I wanted the moon to be. I used blending brushes to apply areas of Bundled Sage, Shabby Shutters, Peeled Paint, Antique Linen and Speckled Egg Distress inks. Next I used a fan brush to flick mostly small drops of water on the panel, let them air dry, and reapplied more ink to soften the effect. I brushed more Antique Linen around the moon and Shabby Shutters around the edges of the panel. Next I brushed Speckled Egg in random spots though the Starry Night stencil from Hero Arts to give some texture and spookiness to the sky. I removed the circle mask, lightly brushed on Colonial White pigment ink from Close to my Heart and Antique Linen and Old Paper distress inks to give the moon some dimension, and then outlined it with a Stardust Gelly Roll pen. I stamped a sentiment from Close to My Heart's Purrfect Halloween set, attached the die cut and then attached the completed panel to a Very Vanilla cardbase.

I plan to enter this card in the Two Old Bats Anything Halloween, Simply Create Too All Things Spooky, Scary, Etc, Cut It Up Trick or Treat, and My Time to Craft! Halloween or Fall Colours challenges.

Thank you for stopping by!
